RETROFITTING RADIO TRANSMITTER OR SMART HOME SYSTEMS IN OLDER HOUSES

There are lots of reasons for modernising your home, from saving energy and modernising technology to just making it look better. Some owners want to convert their home to make it easier to use as they get older.

Windows are one of the main areas to pay attention to when modernising, and with that comes the issue of modernising or automating shade systems. There are countless ways of achieving a real improvement without having to install lots of cable. SELVE can help you find the right solution for your needs.

RETROFITTING ROLLER SHUTTERS AND AWNINGS WITH MOTORS AND AUTOMATION

Older buildings often feature roller shutters with strap coilers and/or awnings without motors. But these manual systems are outdated. If you are looking for more convenience in everyday life, you can retrofit your awnings and roller shutters with electric drives. This lets you move the blinds automatically using either sensors or a timer. SELVE has the right solutions for your individual project. The possibilities are virtually endless.

Our advice: use radio drives

When motorising roller shutters and other types of awnings, we recommend using remote-controlled motors. All you need for this is a power connection in the roller shutter box. You can then control the shutters via a remote controller or wall switch, with no need for any cables.

You can of course install wired drives if you wish, although this is much more time and material intensive, and is therefore the costlier option.

APPLICATION EXAMPLE:

Modernising roller shutters in an older detached house

Starting situation: You want to modernise a house built in the 1970s. Both the upstairs and downstairs windows are fitted with roller shutters and strap coilers. You want to replace all the strap coilers with motors, and operate these either manually, automatically or using a timer. Here we go through the various modernisation options using three examples.
We begin with an overview of the different options. Later, we will explain them in more detail.

Option 1:

Wired drives and timers

During the modernisation of your home, each roller shutter is fitted with a wired drive and moved individually via a timer. Alongside the power supply required in the roller shutter box for the drive, this requires the installation of a cable to the timer for every window.

A timer, such as the Smarttimer Plus can be fitted right next to the window to control the drive. Alternatively, you can place the timer in a central position in the room, such as next to the light switches by the door, and control multiple drives simultaneously.

This option provides only limited possibilities for group and central control. The costs and time requirements for wiring are much greater compared to using radio motors.

Each roller shutter can be controlled automatically at saved times, or via a light sensor that is actuated based on sunlight, depending on the timer model. This saves you having to operate every single roller shutter by hand. Having the roller shutters move even when you are not at home provides additional convenience.

You can also replace simple roller shutter switches with timers at any time and without any structural changes. This makes life even more convenient and is perfect if you already have motor-driven roller shutters installed.

If connecting multiple wired drives, you can incorporate them into a single bus controller. SELVE’s product range includes SMI drives for this purpose.

Option 2:

Radio drives and commeo radio

All windows are fitted with new roller shutters and SELVE radio motors. You can control up to 20 drives (or 32 drives in the Premium version) with a single remote controller: the commeo Multi Send.

There are then various options for controlling the roller shutters:

  • Manual individual control of each roller shutter (individual channels)
  • Joint control of individual roller shutters, such as all shutters of a room or floor (group control)
  • Simultaneous control of all roller shutters (central control)

You can control the shutters either using a button or an automatic timer that opens and closes them in the morning and evening respectively. One increasingly popular option is the Astro function, which controls the roller shutters based on when the sun rises and sets.

You can add additional components to your commeo radio system in any room depending on your needs, including additional hand-held or wall transmitters like the commeo Wall Send. We also offer a comprehensive selection of other radio products. These include additional multi-channel hand-held transmitters, light and weather sensors, radio adapters for plug sockets and radio receivers for integrating lighting.

Best of all, you can flexibly retrofit all SELVE radio products in your existing system. This lets you adapt your radio system to your needs. Simply add additional components once you are up and running with the commeo Multi Send as the central home control. You have full flexibility at all times.

Option 3:

Radio drives and comprehensive smart home control

Do you want to experience the cutting edge of home control technology? Do you value comfort, security and energy efficiency? Then why not install SELVE radio motors in all your windows that you can control automatically when modernising your home?

You have all the possibilities from option 2, but can also lay the foundations for connecting your home – either right away or at some point in the future. If your roller shutters and awnings are fitted with radio drives, you can integrate them flexibly at any time into our SELVE Home smart home system.

Thanks to the compatibility with Homematic IP, this then allows you to cleverly control lighting, heating and other electronic consumers like smoke detectors, alarms and more together. Control your home via an app on your smartphone or tablet, via voice control using Amazon Alexa or automatically in the background. This means less time spent adjusting your shutters and more time for the important things in life.
